Gynecomastia is when the chest seems to swell up and resemble a breast. This is due to the enlargement of breast gland tissue or accumulation of fat and skin in the area which is often referred to as pseudo-gynecomastia according to Dr. Hiren Bhatt, Plastic Surgeon at NVYA Aesthetics, Vadodara.

Gynecomastia is generally painless and feels like a rubbery mass below the surface of the nipple. This issue can be observed either unilaterally or bilaterally. Although Gynecomastia is painless, sometimes tenderness or sensitivity can be observed in the affected region.

Dr. Hiren Bhatt, the expert Plastic Surgeon of NVYA Aesthetics, Vadodara, reveals that every man has natural breast tissue.

However, due to the balance of the hormone testosterone in the body, they cease to grow in size. When there is a case of estrogenic influence and hormonal imbalance, one can observe gynecomastia. (Estrogen is a hormone that is found in higher quantities in women while testosterone is a hormone that is found in higher quantities in men)

This issue can also be observed in teenage boys as they hit puberty and the hormones are imbalanced. It can affect any and all age groups of men.

In cases where an individual may be suffering from thyroid, liver cirrhosis, kidney issues, etc may pave the way for gynecomastia as well.

It is vital that the doctor in charge of the case should first find out the underlying cause of the Gynecomastia and then conclude whether or not surgery is the right solution. at NVYA Aesthetics, Vadodara – Dr. Hiren Bhatt always ensures that a detailed consultation and medical history is taken into account before recommending Gynecomastia Surgery to the patient.

What To Expect Before The Gynecomastia Surgery?

+
-

Before the surgery, Dr. Hiren Bhatt will need to know the entirety of the medical history in order to carry out the process smoothly and without any complications.

The doctor will also ask you to undergo a few blood tests in order to check for any impending issues.

Also, a mammogram might be advised by him so as to eliminate any possibility of male breast cancer.

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed By Dr. Hiren Bhatt?

+
-

The surgery begins with the administration of anaesthesia. Male breast reduction surgery can be done using local anaesthesia (with intravenous sedation) or general anaesthesia. Dr. Hiren Bhatt will take a call on what type of anaesthesia to administer.

If the Gynecomastia is primarily due to excess fat, the Plastic Surgeon – Dr. Hiren Bhatt selects liposuction for its removal. Here a small incision is given around the areola and a small tube connected to a vacuum pump is passed under the skin. Repeated “in and out” movement of the tube is performed and the fat is sucked out.

If the condition is because of excess glandular tissue, then Dr. Hiren Bhatt removes it by giving a cut around the areola and removing glandular tissue.

Sometimes the enlargement is due to both fat and gland. Under these circumstances, Dr. Hiren Bhatt does liposuction followed by excision of the gland tissue.

In extremely rare cases the enlargement is such that it requires removal of skin also. If necessary for contouring then Dr. Bhatt performs the same too during the surgery.

The operation lasts for about 2 hours. The surgery ends with a dressing to the chest region of the patient.

How Is The Recovery Process For Gynecomastia Surgery Patients?

+
-

Gynecomastia surgery is an outpatient procedure, which means patients can go home on the same day after the surgery is over.

There will be mild pain and discomfort in the treated area. These can be controlled with medication prescribed by Dr. Hiren Bhatt, Plastic Surgeon of NVYA Aesthetics, Vadodara.

The patient can go to school or work in about 3 to 5 days time. The dressing will be removed after a week. Stitches are of a self-dissolving type and hence don’t need to be physically removed by Dr. Hiren Bhatt.

For the first few days, there is significant swelling in the area and the result of the surgery might not be appreciated. This, however, decreases with time. The scar is visible initially but fades gradually.

The patient is advised to avoid heavy exercises and contact sports for 3 to 4 weeks, post-surgery.

What Are The Risks Associated With Gynecomastia Surgery?

+
-

As with any other surgery, there are certain risks involved with Gynecomastia Surgery too. They are as follows:

  • Blood Clot: This usually dissolves on its own or it may have to be removed by puncturing it with a needle.

  • Infection: Infection is treated either with antibiotics or it may require an incision for removal of collection. In case of infection, there may be an excess scar formation.

It is to be noted that all these complications of Gynecomastia surgery are uncommon and not all the complication would occur in a given patient.
