Liposuction is one of the very well  known cosmetic surgery procedures. It involves removal of unwanted localized fat from certain areas of body.

For whom and who gets good result?

Liposuction techniques may be used to reduce localized fat deposits of the:

  • Thighs
  • Hips and buttocks
  • Abdomen and waist
  • Upper arms
  • Back
  • Inner knee
  • Chest area
  • Cheeks, chin and neck
  • Calves and ankles

Liposuction can be performed alone or along with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a facelift, breast reduction or a tummy tuck.

It should be noted that liposuction is a surgery for removal of fat but not a procedure for weight reduction. It removes excess fat from a particular area of body e.g., tummy, waist, thigh, in an otherwise mild to moderate obese person. Thus it tries to give a balanced figure to the person.  Generally, one session of liposuction can remove about 6-10 litres of fat.

Liposuction gives best result in persons who are

Ideal liposuction candidates are:

  • Adults within 30% of their ideal weight who have firm, elastic skin and good muscle tone
  • Healthy individuals who do not have a life-threatening illness or medical conditions that can impair healing
  • Non-smokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for body contouring

If you are bothered by excess fat deposits – located anywhere on your body – that don’t respond to diet or exercise, liposuction may be right for you.

What will be the process of consultation for liposuction and Tummy Tuck?

During your liposuction consultation doctor will discuss:

  • Your surgical goals
  • Medical conditions, drug allergies, and medical treatments
  • Current medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, alcohol, tobacco, and drug use
  • Previous surgeries

Your liposuction and tummy tuck surgeon will also:

  • Evaluate your general health status and any pre-existing health conditions or risk factors
  • Take photographs
  • Discuss options
  • Recommend a course of treatment
  • Discuss likely outcomes and any risks or potential complications

What are the procedural steps?

The liposuction procedure includes the following steps:

Step 1 – Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, and general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.

Step 2 – The incision

Liposuction is performed through small, inconspicuous incisions.

First, diluted local anesthesia is infused to reduce bleeding and trauma. Then a thin hollow tube, or cannula, is inserted through the incisions to loosen excess fat using a controlled back and forth motion. The dislodged fat is then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum or syringe attached to the cannula.

Your improved body contour will be apparent once the swelling and fluid retention commonly experienced following liposuction subside. Get more information about liposuction results.

What is the course after operation?

The patient can move around in 24 hours. Most of the patients can be allowed to go home. A change of dressing is required after 4 days.  Dressing is also removed at that time.Stitches are self dissolving type and start dissolving around 10th day.    The pressure garments are to be worn as long as the doctors feels it is necessary. Most of the patients will be advised to wear it for 3-4 months. Light duty can be resumed after 3- 7 days. Mild weight can be lifted after 2 weeks. Around this time one can resume full work.

Some swelling always occurs in any area of body that is operated.  Thus the part which underwent liposuction looks somewhat swollen. About 80% of the swelling goes off in  2 weeks.  It takes 6 to 8 week for remaining swelling to clear. Though the result of liposuction can be seen even on operation table, it is best appreciated after 16 to 24 weeks. Some areas of treatment will become stony hard, this will however, clear with local massage in about 4-6 weeks’ time.

Local massage with bland cream will be advised to most patients about 2 weeks after surgery.

After operation the skin shows brownish discoloration and feels ‘bumpy’  that is uneven. It will clear on its own in 4 weeks.

Some patients feel a decreased sensation in the area operated.  This is routine and clears off in about 4-6 weeks.

Does the fat refill in the area which underwent liposuction?

Fat tends to remain in the form of cells in body.  Liposuction removes these ‘storehouses’ of fat. Thus in principle there is no recurrent deposition of fat. It has been seen however that when a person shows excessive weight gain, the area that underwent liposuction also shows some increase.

Risks associated with liposuction:

Liposuction like any other operation carries risks of anesthesia and surgery. Your consulting doctor will examine you and will explain the risks and severity as well as the Liposuction cost.
